Training to be a Home-Start Herefordshire volunteer

Volunteers are selected based on their friendliness and understanding. They undergo a preparation course before being matched with a family. Volunteers bring their unique skills and experience to the families they visit. Their time and friendship make a significant impact on the families they visit.

Join other new volunteers in our upcoming preparation course. The free training runs throughout the year and offers a flexible schedule with the option for accreditation. It includes online training at your own pace and three in-house, face-to-face sessions over approximately six weeks, allowing you to balance your other commitments.

Volunteer testimonials

From a background of caring for children and families, I was aware that there was still a lot of opportunities to help following my retirement.

I enjoy meeting the families and possibly, hopefully giving them friendship and support.

I appreciate the stimulation of training, learning more about the various aspects of daily living that influence and affect the families.

The team of Coordinators and Scheme Manager provide a wealth of support and knowledge to help at any stage. Their expertise and recognition of matching volunteers and families is amazing.

Volunteer

Family is the most important support anyone can have, and as a volunteer, being embraced into the family of Home-Start is a warm and comfortable feeling.
Volunteer

I would say that the reason I volunteer is that when I was a young mum and struggling to cope, I remember the support, reassurance and kindness I was shown by other mothers. Young mums now seem more isolated than ever before. If I can help any mum feel a bit better about her life, and pass on some of what I have learned, then that’s great. Volunteering with Home-Start is an entirely positive experience, I feel very supported by the Home-Start staff and would encourage anyone considering it to join up.
Volunteer

I have enjoyed every second of the learning, it was great meeting new people and learning new skills, it gave me a new lease of life. I really enjoyed meeting my first family although I was very nervous and worried, I wouldn’t be able to make a difference we all just clicked, and it was a great experience, and it was good to spend one to one time with a young person where I could just focus on them and what they needed.

Join us as a Trustee to help shape the future of our work with families

Our Trustees provide essential leadership, guidance and governance from their own professional or lived experiences. They also play an important role as ambassadors for our work and can offer particular skills to the organisation (like human resources, information management or finance, for example). We welcome interest from those who can be passionate about our work with parents, children, families and the community.

Importantly, the Board of Trustees should reflect the communities in which we work. We already benefit from a variety of skills, experiences and backgrounds and now need to add to that dynamic and creative team.

The minimum commitment as a Trustee is for 8 – 10 hours each month, to attend meetings or to engage in Board discussions via email and online forums. Further opportunities to get involved are possible too, so we can be flexible to suit individual motivations to volunteer.
